Understanding the new Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) and it’s format
The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is a novel version of the NCLEX exam, currently developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). The objective of this new version is to evaluate the clinical judgment abilities of nursing candidates more precisely and effectively by employing advanced technologies and innovative testing methods.
- The NGN format will differ from the current NCLEX exam in several ways. The addition of new question types, such as multiple-response and extended drag-and-drop questions, to better assess clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.
- The use of interactive simulations that mimic real-world nursing scenarios to provide a more realistic testing experience.
- The inclusion of enhanced analytics and reporting to provide more detailed feedback to nursing schools and candidates on their strengths and weaknesses.
- The incorporation of real-time feedback during the exam to help candidates improve their performance as they go.
Preparing for the NGN exam will require a different approach to studying and practicing than the NCLEX exam. Candidates will need to focus on developing their clinical judgment skills and critical thinking abilities, as well as become familiar with the new question types and interactive simulations that will be included in the NGN exam. This preparation may include practicing with sample questions and simulations to become comfortable with the new testing methods.
Nursing schools and educators will also need to adapt their curriculums to better prepare students for the NGN exam. This may include incorporating new teaching methods, tools, and resources to help students develop the skills they need to succeed on the NGN exam and in their nursing careers.
